• Use the coarse gold mirror reference cap for standard diffuse samples or external reflectance
• Use the smooth gold mirror reference cap for external reflectance (45° or grazing angle)
• Use the coarse silver mirror reference cap for extremely diffuse samples
• Use the smooth silver mirror reference cap for highly reflective samples typically requiring grazing angle measurements

An external reflectance measurement using FTIR requires a reference sample to collect the background measurement. The reference sample is a disk that snaps onto the tip of the reflectance probe. A range of reference caps are available, each designed to handle a different purpose for the type of sampling interface and sample being measured.
