Total organic carbon (TOC)
Total organic carbon (TOC) is the amount of carbon bound in an organic compound and is often used as a non-specific indicator of water quality. The rapid colorimetric method of TOC determination is easy and accurate.
- Rapid digestion
- Choice of photometers and spectrophotometers and ready-to-use TOC tubes and powder pillows.
Detecting organic contamination in water can be simple with total organic carbon (TOC) analysis solutions from Avantor®. Using sodium persulfate as the primary reagent, dissolved organic carbon is oxidized, and the resulting CO₂ is measured with precision using spectrophotometry. Depending on the water type, additional reagents such as acids or bases may be required for accurate analysis.
VWR® offers a full range of high-quality reagents to support your TOC analysis, including:
- Sodium hydroxide 1.2 N solution
- Sulfuric acid 1.8 N solution
- Sodium persulfate in various concentrations
- Phosphoric acid (10% and 25% solutions)

You can conduct hassle-free analysis with our user-friendly system. Nearly all the reagents you’ll need come pre-packaged in convenient cells, ready for you to use. If you need additional reagents for determination or sample pre-treatment, we can provide them in easy-to-handle, dose-metering bottles for precise application.
- Validated and standard-compliant analysis reagents
- Bar code system enables rapid and simple operation
- Comprehensive quality control documentation provided for every test
- Batch and quality certificates available online
