Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

     1. Open the bottle in a fume hood and leave overnight.
      a. Be careful, as chlorine is a toxic gas. Make sure the fume hood is closed and running.
     2. The chlorine in the solution will evaporate and then the remaining liquid can be poured down the drain.
  • Solution Preparation:
There are three methods to prepare chlorine water for use in the classroom. All methods should take place in a fume hood. Method 1: Bubble chlorine gas from a gas cylinder into water. Method 2: Set up a gas generating apparatus with a funnel and delivery tube in a 2 hole rubber stopper. Add about 10 g of manganese dioxide (MnO2) to a flask. Slowly add about 40 ml of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and warm the flask with the rubber stopper inserted. The gas that is produced needs to be bubbled into a flask containing about 1 L of water. Method 3: Mix 100 ml of commercial bleach with 25 ml of 6 M hydrochloric acid. Dilute to a final volume of 1 L with water. Leave the container open until the bubbling stops. It may take days for the solution to stop bubbling. Once the solution stops bubbling, cap the bottle with the chlorine water in it.
