Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is expressed in glial cells within the central and peripheral nervous systems. CNTF stimulates gene expression, cell survival or differentiation in a variety of neuronal cell types such as sensory, sympathetic, ciliary and motor neurons. CNTF itself lacks a classical signal peptide sequence of a secreted protein, but is thought to convey its cytoprotective effects after release from adult glial cells by some mechanism induced by injury.

SCUBE3 Antibody: SCUBE3 is a member of a family of secreted glycoproteins that contain N-terminal EGF-like repeats and C-terminal cysteine-rich motifs and CUB domain and is highly expressed in primary osteoblasts and bones, and to a lesser extent in heart (1,2). Other studies have shown that overexpression of SCUBE3 in mice induced cardiac hypertrophy, suggesting that it may also play a role in the regulation of cardiac growth. SCUBE3 has been shown to be an endogenous TGF-beta receptor ligand (3,4) and is thought to promote lung cancer cell mobility and invasiveness. In lung cancer cells, the secreted SCUBE3 protein was cleaved by MMP2 and MMP9, allowing the activation of the TGF-beta receptor, the increase of Smad2/3 transcriptional activity and the upregulation of expression of proteins such as TGF-beta1, VEGF, Snail, and Slug.

Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase 1 (UCHL1) has several other names, such as ubiquitin carboxyl esterase L1, ubiquitin thiolesterase, neuron-specific protein PGP9.5 and Park5. This has been claimed to represent 1-2% of total brain protein. It was later found that a ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase enzyme activity was associated with the PGP9.5 protein, resulting in the renaming of PGP9.5 to ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase 1.This enzyme is a thiol protease that recognizes and hydrolyzes a peptide bond at the C-terminal glycine of ubiquitin. The enzyme also binds to free monoubiquitin and may prevent its degradation in lysosomes.
