  • Disposal Method:
This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

     1. For hydrofluoric acid disposal, a plastic container must be used as hydrofluoric acid will react with the glass. The container should be placed in a fume hood.
     2. Fill the plastic container with a three-fold molar excess of solid calcium hydroxide, then fill it half full with water.
     3. Slowly add the hydrofluoric acid to the calcium hydroxide suspension.
      a. Heat may be evolved, if necessary, cool the plastic container in an ice bath.
     4. Neutralize the basic solution with dilute hydrochloric acid to a pH of about 7.
      a. If the solution becomes too acidic, calcium fluoride will precipitate out.
     5. After letting the neutralized suspension sit overnight, decant the liquid.
     6. Once the solid has dried, place it in a container and it should be disposed of in a landfill.
     7. Pour the final solution down the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.
  • Solution Preparation:
To prepare a solution, determine the formula weight of the material, the concentration (Molarity) of the solution, and the amount of solution desired in Liters. Once this information has been obtained, use the following formula:
(Formula Weight) x (Concentration) x (Desired Volume) = Number of grams in desired volume of liquid

    For a 1 M, 1 L solution:
    (Formula Weight) x (1 mol/L) x (1 L) = x g added to 1-L volumetric flask. Dilute to a final volume of 1 L with DI Water.
