  • Disposal Method:
This disposal method is published for your convenience. You MUST have checked with your federal, state, and local regulations before using this method and these methods are only applicable for small laboratory sized quantities.

Use a lab apron, chemical resistant gloves and goggles before following the below method to dispose of hazardous waste.

     1. Prepare a saturated solution of sodium carbonate in a large beaker and place it in a fume hood.
     2. Add a few grams or milliliters of the substance to the sodium carbonate solution in the large beaker. Carbon dioxide gas will be generated and this will be evidence that the salt of the acid is being formed.
      a. A temperature rise may occur and if so, place the large beaker in an even larger ice water bath.
     3. As long as everything is proceeding as expected, continue adding the substance to the sodium carbonate solution.
     4. The mixture that will be formed will be basic and will need to be neutralized before it can be poured down the drain. Use a dilute hydrochloric acid to neutralize the solution to a pH of 7.
     5. Pour the final solution down the drain with at least a 20-fold excess of water.
  • Solution Preparation:
Use 4.6 g of adipoyl chloride in 100 ml of hexanes for the preparation of nylon experiment.
