The Barnes Maze is often used to assess spatial learning and memory impairments in rodent models of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury. The task is repeated over several trials, and researchers measure performance parameters such as the time taken to find the escape box, the number of errors made (visiting incorrect holes), and the overall strategy employed by the animal to solve the task.
For Barnes Maze modifications, the delayed matching to place Barnes Maze is a modification of the Barnes Maze using a well patterned Barnes Maze with 16 holes on the outer ring, 16 on the middle ring, and 8 holes on the inner ring with distance of 50, 35, and 20 cm to the center of platform, respectively. The randomized Barnes Maze increases the task difficulty of the classic Barnes Maze, leading to a decrease in the serial strategy of goal hole choice. The cheeseboard maze is a circular maze with 32 wells forming a radial pattern. The wells were spaced radially resulting in a similar shape to a radial arm maze with wells distributed throughout the table.
