The expression of foreign proteins in E. coli using a glutathione S-transferase (GST) fusion system is a method of choice for studying the function of particular proteins, for purifying interacting factors and for generating antibodies against fused proteins.

GST antibodies will bind to the immobilized GST column, whereas antibodies against other fusion proteins will pass through the column unrestrained.
